Show on Sat Jul 12, 2014 at 11:00 pm
Joshua Van Tassel's Double Tooth (Toronto, ON/Halifax, NS)
Joshua Van Tassel has an open relationship with music. He’s not tied to one specific genre, sound or role as a music-maker and we’re happy for that. Originally from rural Nova Scotia, now based in Toronto, Van Tassel has supported acts that include the Great Lake Swimmers, Royal Wood, Justin Rutledge, Selina Martin, and produced albums for the likes of David Myles, Dean Drouilliard and Megan Bonnell. He’s also one hell of a solo artist. He makes atmospheric feeling electro-acoustic music that’s capable of both soothing and challenging listeners with a meld of familiar folksy sounds, synths and drum machines. Van Tassel’s last two releases, the eponymous Joshua Van Tassel and Dream Date, earned him East Coast Music Award nominations, as well as national acclaim from NOW, The Toronto Star and CBC. His Double Tooth project has him teamed up with Toronto keyboard player and composter Robbie Grunwald, who’s played a colourful assortment of international gigs, and worked with Jill Barber, David Myles and Doug Paisley. Together the pair promise a psychedelic dance party inspired by a recording experiment that was too good not to continue. A little bit a ‘60s Nigerian music and a lot of synth, drum machines and live percussion, the eclectic Double Tooth will take you on a sonic trip.
Personnel: Joshua Van Tassel (percussion), Robbie Grunwald (keyboards), Kyle Cunjak (bass)
Double Tooth is a psychedelic dance party from the future's past, blending analog synths, drum machines, and percussion with fully analog humans Joshua Van Tassel and Robbie Grunwald. What began as a recording experiment gone right turned into a six armed live show that blends the influence of '60s Nigerian music with the sonic techniques of now.
Joshua Van Tassel is a man of many hats. Born in rural Nova Scotia, he’s studied music across Canada with stints in his home province of Nova Scotia as well as Ontario and Alberta. Something of a musical chameleon, he’s acted in a supporting role for such diverse artists as Doug Paisley, Great Lake Swimmers, David Myles, Royal Wood, Justin Rutledge, Ronley Teper, Selina Martin and Valery Gore, among others. Joshua is also quickly becoming known as a go to producer, having made albums for David Myles, Dean Drouillard, Christine Bougie, Megan Bonnell, Kirty, and more. With his solo career, Van Tassel has a built a reputation as a producer and composer of electro-acoustic music that is both highly sophisticated and easily digestible. His music, which has been featured on the Outdoor Life Network’s program Departures and Descending, is a tapestry of traditions; the familiar plucking of folk music floats amongst drum machines and ambient field recordings, driving bass lines melt into flowing synth melodies. His self-titled album has received critical acclaim from the CBC, The Toronto Star, NOW Magazine, was chosen as one of the top albums of 2011 by CBC Radio 2's The Signal and was nominated for a 2013 ECMA Award. His new album Dream Date was released to critical acclaim in April 2013, earning a Music Nova Scotia Awards and a second consecutive ECMA nomination for Electronic Album of the Year.
